Thomas P.'s Story

Went to B.S.C. a yr. after high school, while livng the biker lifestyle. Moved to Idaho City in 77, framing cabins and was the bouncer at the Miners Exchange Saloon. Did a stint as a Deputy City Marshall to enforce the new "no alcohol on the streets law. Went work at Bogus Basin operating snow-cats and grooming slopes. Turned into a 16 yr. winter habit. Was a special deputy for the Boise County Sheriff's Dept. at the ski area. Lived in a cabin near the ski area 3 different times. Became a licensed river guide on the Main and Middle Fork of the Salmon River during the summers, and a hunting, fishing guide and packer during the fall for Mackay Bar Corp. Became a ranch manager for them. Ended up licensed to guide on 10 different rivers in Idaho. Elizabeth and I moved onto the Hawkins Ranch in 83, half way up to the ski area and lived there 8 yrs. taking care of the cows while still guiding, running rivers and doing the ski are in the winters. Started my own outfitting business at Bogus Basin doing horse back trail rides in 85 in an attempt to make the ski area a full time deal. It paid the bills but didn't realize much profit. 20 head of horses dang near ate us out of house and home. Ran it through 87...Expand for more
. Became a fire crew bus driver in 88 and watched Yellowstone Park go up in flames. Went on huge fires in Id, and Cal for 3 yrs. Moved down to the Donoho Ranch in 90, have been through 3 different owners in 20 yrs. Boise Parks and Rec. owns it now and have put in 7 miles of hiking and biking trails. Also in 90, formed Firewater Co. with Scott Graham and operated a tactical water tender w/ foam for 18 yrs fighting fires. At the same time I worked my way up to an engine Captain fighting fires, and a Level II law enforcement officer patrolling the forest for the Forest Service. Finally realized they were never going to put me on full time because of my age, and the law enforcement game was the craziest thing I'd ever seen. Went to work a Tamarack Resort in 05 and stayed until the ship started taking on water big time and was going down. 2 yrs. of unemployment followed. Now I find that at my age and with only "outdoor' work experience, most employers just aren't interested and have no need for those kinds of skills. Now I'm working on a re-fencing project here above the ranch for a private landowner to put cattle back out there, and I still go on big fires with Firewater Co. when they call and need us.
